Acclaimed French creative Jean Jullien is poised to launch his first individual art show in China, titled 'JUJU's Castle,' at the NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in Shanghai. This landmark exhibition, commencing on July 12, will showcase an extensive collection of over 80 new artistic creations, encompassing paintings, sculptural pieces, diverse art objects, and expansive installations. Visitors will be drawn into a captivating, fantastical exploration, navigating through Jullien's imaginative realm characterized by its soft, inviting color palette.
Transformed into an inviting, pastel-toned labyrinth, the exhibition casts each visitor as a protagonist in an allegorical adventure. The journey begins with the selection of one of four distinctive characters, setting the stage for an immersive dive into the profound depths of 'JUJU's Castle.' This enchanting space is a direct manifestation of Jullien's early recollections and his enduring passion for the genre of fantasy.
The collection of paintings featured in the exhibition draws significant inspiration from Jullien's time spent residing in Tokyo. These artworks vividly depict the bustling urban landscape, with soaring skyscrapers and the vibrant, neon-illuminated arcade games, alongside epic confrontations between knights and samurai. Jullien notes, "It appears to me that fantasy has permeated reality in countless ways here, enriching it, making it more dreamlike. This enchanting everyday existence seems like the perfect counterpoint to modern living."
True to Jullien's distinctive artistic signature, this exhibition skillfully intertwines sincerity, nostalgic sentiment, and an undeniable sense of joy with a profound ethos of serenity and escapism. The very genesis of 'JUJU's Castle' originated from Jullien's formative years, specifically from the captivating experience of sifting through his uncle's extensive collection of meticulously hand-painted RPG miniatures. These miniature figures, with their inherent narratives of magic-wielding heroes and formidable dragon encounters played out on screen, provided Jullien with a cherished mental sanctuary that has remained with him throughout his life. He poignantly states, "Years later, as the world appears increasingly challenging, I've chosen to revisit Juju's castle once more, and extend its gates to the public, inviting all to share in this haven of imagination."
This remarkable showcase will debut on July 12 and will continue to welcome visitors until October 26. The NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE is located at 3F, Tower #1, HuaMu Time Editon, No.1, Lane 99, South Yanggao Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. This is an opportunity to experience Jullien's distinctive artistic vision and immerse yourself in a world crafted from memory, imagination, and a playful spirit.
