For some time, whispers have circulated regarding a more diminutive Land Rover Defender. Recent statements from the automaker’s brand director, Mark Cameron, confirm that this project is not only alive but is now "well advanced." The goal is to introduce a compact SUV that offers robust performance, nearly matching the formidable capabilities of the larger Defender. This new model will be a cornerstone in establishing Defender as an independent sub-brand, much like the successful Range Rover family, each with its unique characteristics while staying true to the Defender's core values.
Cameron articulated a broader strategic vision for the Defender marque. The objective is to cultivate Defender into a distinct "luxury lifestyle brand." While currently featuring a single model with various configurations, the long-term plan involves a significant expansion of the brand's portfolio over the next seven to ten years. This expansion will see a diverse range of off-road-focused SUVs, each embodying the spirit and capability synonymous with the Defender name, yet tailored to different segments and preferences.
Although many specifics remain under wraps, initial details suggest the compact Defender will utilize JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, making it a fully electric vehicle. This architecture is designed to support several upcoming electric SUVs, implying a focus on sustainable and high-performance electric powertrains. A dual-motor configuration with standard all-wheel drive is anticipated, ensuring robust traction and off-road capability. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle is expected to be approximately 177 inches long, positioning it slightly larger than competitors like the Ford Bronco Sport and in direct contention with Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming compact G-Class.
Despite its smaller size and electric powertrain, Land Rover emphasizes that the compact Defender will not compromise on its heritage. The brand is committed to ensuring that this new model retains the authentic off-road capability for which the Defender is renowned. Cameron underscored this commitment, stating that preserving the Defender's DNA is paramount to prevent it from simply blending into the crowded SUV market. This dedication means enthusiasts can expect a vehicle that, while compact and electrified, remains true to the adventurous and rugged spirit of the Defender.
