BMW has offered a preliminary view of its forthcoming all-electric 3 Series, designated as the i3, which is set to debut next year. This new iteration of the i3, distinct from its earlier city car namesake, will utilize the innovative Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture, shared with the recently introduced iX3. This strategic move highlights BMW's decisive pivot towards electrification, signaling a monumental transformation for one of its most celebrated models.
During the launch event for the 2026 iX3, BMW's Chairman, Oliver Zipse, confirmed that the i3 would be the pioneering variant of the next-generation 3 Series. This signifies a departure from previous practices, as the electric model will precede any new gasoline-powered versions, which are slated to follow on a separate platform. The current G20 3 Series underwent a refresh in 2022, having initially been released in 2018.
The Neue Klasse platform represents BMW's inaugural 800-volt electrical system, promising substantial advancements in performance and charging capabilities. The U.S. version of the iX3 50 xDrive, built on this same platform, is projected to achieve an impressive range of 400 miles on the EPA test cycle. Furthermore, it supports ultra-fast charging at up to 400 kilowatts, enabling the addition of approximately 230 miles of range in a mere ten minutes. Powering this electric SUV are BMW's sixth-generation electric motors, generating a combined output of 463 horsepower and 473 pound-feet of torque.
It is anticipated that the i3 will incorporate much of the same advanced hardware as the iX3. While a less potent, more energy-efficient, single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant is likely to be offered, the interior design will also align closely with the iX3. This includes a broad widescreen display positioned at the base of the windshield, replacing conventional gauges, and a dashboard-mounted touchscreen that will operate BMW's latest Operating System X. The aesthetic direction of the new i3 has already been hinted at by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept vehicle, showcasing a design that, despite camouflage, appears simpler and features a more pronounced Hofmeister kink in the rear window, paying homage to classic Neue Klasse sedans such as the iconic 2002.
Looking ahead, BMW plans to introduce an M performance variant of the new i3, while also maintaining production of a gasoline-powered M3. Chairman Zipse's remarks at the iX3 unveiling also revealed an ambitious timeline for the German automaker: a total of 40 new or refreshed models are expected to be launched by the close of 2027. This aggressive product rollout underscores BMW's commitment to expanding its electric portfolio and maintaining its competitive edge in the evolving automotive landscape.
